Sabur has been in the rug business for 34 years and until recently had a store at the Fyshwick Markets which he has run since 1978. Born in Kabul, Sabur worked in a rug shop in Afghanistan before emigrating to Australia. He returns there regularly to directly source handmade rugs and carpets particularly from Northern Afghanistan. The rugs are handmade in villages from local, hand spun wool that is dyed and then woven into carpets and rugs that take many months to make.
There are more than 4000 rugs at Oriental Bazaar, some over 100 years old, including a wide range of stunning traditional Afghan flat weave kilims which were were traditionally used by villages as the only floor coverings in their homes. Oriental Bazaar also has rugs in Persian and Central Asian styles.
The hand made rugs at Oriental Bazaar are works of art that also are very practical additions to any house becoming more beautiful and prized with time and wear. Every rug is unique with its own design and history; and the amount of time and craftsmanship that goes into every rug is extraordinary.
Come in and visit the new Oriental Bazaar shop (opposite The 2 Hands Cafe, on the corner of Lyell St and Newcastle St, Fyshwick) to browse or learn more about the many rugs and carpets from the very knowledgeable Sabur.
